Lesser Londonpride

Saxifraga cuneifolia

Also known as Shield-leaved Saxifrage, Spoon-leaved Saxifrage, Wedge-leaved Saxifrage

Lesser Londonpride forms spreading carpets of glossy, spoon-shaped leaves across damp, mossy rocks and shaded forest floors in mountainous southern and central Europe. In early summer, delicate leafless stems rise above the foliage to bear loose sprays of starry white flowers speckled with tiny yellow and red dots. The plant spreads via thin stolons, anchoring into nutrient-poor crevices where it stabilizes rocky slopes and catches falling organic debris.

  • Viewing Season: Look for flowers from May through July on shady woodland trails and mossy boulders.
  • Tread Lightly: Avoid stepping on moss-covered screes where the shallow-rooted rosettes dislodge easily.
  • Close Inspection: Examine petal surfaces with a hand lens to appreciate the delicate red and yellow spots.
