Sulawesi Hornbill

Rhabdotorrhinus exarhatus

Also known as Sulawesi Tarictic Hornbill, Temminck's Hornbill, Sulawesi Dwarf Hornbill

Sulawesi hornbills travel through primary rainforest canopies in tight family groups of up to eight individuals, chattering with sharp, nasal yelps. Unlike many solitary hornbills, they practice cooperative breeding, where non-breeding helpers assist the dominant pair with feeding and nest defense. Nesting females wall themselves inside large tree cavities with mud and feces, leaving only a narrow vertical slit through which the male and helpers pass fruit and insects.

What to notice
Look for a small black hornbill with a pale, grooved casque; males have a bright yellow face and throat, while females are all black.
Support conservation
Observe silently through binoculars from forest trails and never play recorded calls near suspected nesting hollows.
Responsible observation
  • Sound cues: Listen for distinctive nasal honks and chuckles echoing from the subcanopy.
  • Fruiting trees: Watch large strangler figs early in the morning when family groups gather to forage.
  • Nesting sensitivity: Keep a respectful distance from large dead or hollow trees during the dry breeding season.
