Blue Quandong

Elaeocarpus angustifolius

Also known as Blue Marble Tree, Rudraksha Tree, Silver Quandong, White Quandong

Blue quandongs dominate tropical rainforest canopies, supported by expansive fluted buttress roots that stabilize the massive trunk in shallow soils. Their remarkable spherical fruits achieve a dazzling, iridescent cobalt sheen through structural coloration in the cuticle rather than blue pigments. Dropping heavily through the seasons, these fruits serve as a cornerstone food resource for rainforest seed dispersers like cassowaries and fruit pigeons.

Wild berries have toxic look-alikes; never eat based on app identification alone.
Responsible observation
  • Observation: Scan the forest floor beneath buttressed canopy trees for bright metallic-blue fallen fruits.
  • Wildlife Watching: Stake out fruiting branches early in the morning to spot feeding fruit pigeons and bowerbirds.
