Scarlet Robin
Petroica boodangAlso known as Scarlet-breasted Robin
Scarlet robins are quiet, territorial songbirds easily recognized by the male's brilliant red breast contrasting sharply against a black throat and white forehead spot. They spend much of their day perched on low branches, pouncing onto the ground to snatch insects from the leaf litter. During the breeding season, pairs defend territories with soft, trilling songs, constructing delicate cup-shaped nests of bark and grass bound with spiderwebs.

- Keep Your Distance: Avoid approaching nesting pairs in spring, as they are sensitive to disturbance near their low nests.
