Metallic Echeveria

Echeveria gibbiflora

Also known as Giant Echeveria, Rock Echeveria

Metallic Echeveria anchors into rocky crevices and volcanic outcrops across Mexico and Guatemala, forming substantial rosettes of spoon-shaped leaves coated in powdery epicuticular wax. In autumn and winter, mature rosettes elevate tall, branching stalks lined with bell-shaped coral flowers that cater to passing hummingbirds. Prized as the genetic ancestor to dozens of wavy-leaved garden hybrids, wild specimens flush vivid shades of bronze and amethyst when bathed in full sun.

  • Delicate Powder: Avoid touching the leaves, as skin oils rub off the powdery wax coating that guards against UV rays.
  • Seasonal Blooms: Look for feeding hummingbirds around the arching floral stalks from late autumn into winter.
