Ombu

Phytolacca dioica

Also known as Umbu, Bella Sombra

Ombú stands as an iconic sentinel of the South American Pampas, growing into an immense shade tree despite technically functioning as a gigantic evergreen herb. Its broad, umbrella-like canopy and massive swollen base store copious amounts of water, enabling it to endure dry grassland seasons and sweeping pampas wildfires. Because its soft, fibrous trunk lacks true wood, the tree cannot be felled for lumber or burned as firewood, cementing its historic place as a vital resting haven for nomadic cattle herders across open plains.

Why interaction risk is high
All parts contain toxic saponins; never ingest leaves or berries and keep curious pets away.
Why it is dangerous
Tissues contain toxic saponins, phytolaccine, and oxalates that induce violent gastrointestinal distress, vomiting, and tremors upon ingestion.
How to recognize a risky encounter
Recognizable by its immense, swollen trunk base, broad umbrella canopy, smooth elliptical leaves, and hanging clusters of greenish berries.
What to do
Never consume any berries or foliage, and wash hands thoroughly if handling sap during pruning or transplanting.
Responsible observation
  • Canopy Observation: Stand beneath the broad canopy to inspect the intricate branching and massive buttressed roots without damaging the fragile bark.
  • Bonsai Practice: Cultivators favor container-grown specimens because the soft trunk readily responds to pruning and wiring.
