Eastern box turtles spend their entire lives within a small home range rarely larger than a few acres, navigating familiar forest floors with remarkable spatial memory. A double-hinged lower shell allows them to pull their head, limbs, and tail entirely inside for complete protection against predators. Females lay small clutches of eggs in self-dug soil nests, leaving hatchlings to navigate their perilous early years independently.
