Darth Vader Giant Pill-Millipede
Zoosphaerium darthvaderiAlso known as Darth Vader Pill Millipede
Darth Vader giant pill-millipedes are heavily armored detritivores restricted to misty remnant plateau forests in Madagascar. When threatened, they roll into an impenetrable, tightly interlocking sphere, shielded by polished dark tergites reminiscent of an iconic helmet. They play an essential ecological role by breaking down decaying leaf litter and cycling nutrients through fragile forest soils.

- Very high
- Why interaction risk is low
- Safe to observe at a normal distance.
- What to notice
- Look for a large, glossy black pill-millipede that curls completely into a smooth sphere when disturbed.
- Support conservation
- Do not touch, collect, or prod individuals, and keep strictly to established reserve trails.
Responsible observation
- Watch Your Step: Tread carefully along forest floor paths where dark individuals blend with damp mulch.
- Preserve Cover: Avoid raking through the leaf layer, which exposes them to desiccation.
