North American Cougar

Puma concolor couguar

Also known as Mountain Lion, Panther, Puma, Catamount

North American cougars are solitary, secretive predators that hold the largest geographic range of any native land mammal in the Western Hemisphere. They stalk prey silently through rugged terrain, relying on powerful hind legs to leap over 10 meters in a single bound. Communication relies mostly on scent marking and piercing vocalizations like screams rather than true roars.

Why interaction risk is high
Large apex predator; maintain distance, stay calm, make yourself look big, and never run.
Why it is dangerous
Possesses massive muscle mass, sharp claws, and powerful jaws engineered to crush the neck of large prey.
How to recognize a risky encounter
Look for a large, uniformly tawny coat, a long heavy tail tipped in black, and small rounded ears without tufts.
What to do
Maintain eye contact, do not crouch or turn your back, and fight back vigorously if attacked.
Responsible observation
  • Safety protocol: If encountered, stand tall, raise your arms, speak loudly, and back away slowly without turning around.
  • Leash pets: Keep dogs on short leashes when hiking through active cougar country to prevent triggering predatory instincts.
  • Never run: Running mimics prey behavior and can trigger a chase response from a nearby cat.
