Redroot amaranth is a robust annual herb easily recognized by its bright pink or red taproot and dense, bristly green flower spikes. A single vigorous plant can release tens of thousands of tiny black seeds, allowing it to rapidly colonize disturbed soils and crop fields worldwide. Its deep root system and efficient photosynthetic pathway make it exceptionally resilient to heat and drought.
Accumulates nitrates and oxalates toxic to livestock; wild plants have toxic look-alikes, so avoid consuming them.
Why it is dangerous
Accumulates high levels of nitrates and soluble oxalates, which can cause severe kidney damage or respiratory stress in livestock and pets if consumed.
How to recognize a risky encounter
Look for a stout stem with fine hairs, a reddish pink lower taproot, and compact green spikelets at the top.
What to do
Do not feed wild-gathered foliage to domestic pets or livestock, and wear gloves to pull adult stems comfortably.

Soil disturbance: Rapidly takes root wherever soil is tilled or cleared.
Hand pulling: Remove young plants before flowering to prevent huge seed banks in garden soil.
