Interior Least Tern

Interior least terns nest in sparse colonies on bare sandbars along major river systems throughout central North America. These tiny seabirds hover over shallow river channels before executing swift vertical dives to capture small forage fish. Nesting adults aggressively dive-bomb potential predators and human intruders with shrill alarm calls to protect their well-camouflaged ground nests.
