Fountain Grass

Also known as Crimson Fountaingrass, African Fountain Grass, Tender Fountain Grass

Fountain grass forms dense, tussocked clumps of arching, wire-like blades topped by feathery, bristly flower spikes that shift from purplish-crimson to pale straw as seeds ripen. Deep fibrous root networks and efficient C4 photosynthesis allow it to flourish in arid rocky soils, lava flows, and disturbed roadsides where native vegetation struggles. In fire-prone regions where it has been introduced, dense stands dramatically elevate wildfire frequency, rapidly resprouting from root crowns and outcompeting endemic flora after burns.
