African Wild Ass
Equus africanusAlso known as African Wild Donkey, Somali Wild Ass, Nubian Wild Ass
African wild asses are tough, arid-adapted equids that survive in some of the most unforgiving desert landscapes on Earth. Unlike social horses, they live in loose, fluid groups where solitary stallions defend vast territories centred around precious waterholes. Their remarkably loud, resonant brays can carry over five kilometres across open terrain, allowing individuals to maintain contact across sparse desert expanses.

- Why interaction risk is low
- Capably delivers powerful kicks and bites if cornered; observe strictly from a safe distance.
- What to notice
- Look for a slender, pale greyish fawn coat, long ears, and bold black horizontal stripes on the lower legs.
- Support conservation
- View exclusively from managed safari vehicles with experienced guides, never approaching on foot or disturbing feeding herds.
Responsible observation
- Distance: Maintain a wide separation of at least 100 meters to avoid causing stress or flight.
- Watering sources: Never block access to desert water sources, which are vital for their survival.
- Quiet watching: Remain silent inside vehicles, as their exceptional hearing makes them alert to distant sounds.
