Mexican Ruellia

Ruellia simplex

Also known as Mexican Petunia, Mexican Bluebell, Britton's Wild Petunia, Purple Showers

Mexican Ruellia produces striking purple trumpet flowers that open for just a single day above dark, lance-shaped foliage. Sturdy purple-tinged stems spread rapidly through creeping underground rhizomes, forming dense colonies in wetland margins and garden beds. When mature seed capsules dry, they detonate violently upon contact with moisture, launching seeds several meters away.

Responsible observation
  • Garden Containment: Grow in sealed pots or physical barriers to stop aggressive rhizome spread.
  • Seed Observation: Watch mature brown pods pop open when touched with a damp drop of water.
  • Pollinator Spotting: Visit patches in early morning when blooms fresh open to see foraging bees.
