Mexican Ruellia

Mexican Ruellia produces striking purple trumpet flowers that open for just a single day above dark, lance-shaped foliage. Sturdy purple-tinged stems spread rapidly through creeping underground rhizomes, forming dense colonies in wetland margins and garden beds. When mature seed capsules dry, they detonate violently upon contact with moisture, launching seeds several meters away.
