Yellow pitcher plants lure flying and crawling insects into tall, hollow leaf trumpets lined with downward-pointing slippery hairs and nectar laced with a natural narcotic. Large, butter-yellow blossoms open in early spring before the carnivorous pitchers fully mature, preventing pollinators from accidentally falling into the lethal traps. Dense colonies carpet nutrient-poor pine savannas and acidic bogs across the southeastern coastal plain.
