Pacific Glasswort

Salicornia pacifica

Also known as Pacific Pickleweed

Pacific Glasswort is a low succulent of tidal marshes, built from jointed, nearly leafless green stems that often redden with age or stress. Dense mats tolerate regular saltwater flooding and help shelter small marsh animals.

Stay on designated routes because salt-marsh soils and nesting cover are easily damaged.
Responsible observation
  • Identify: Look for fleshy jointed stems with leaves reduced to tiny scales.
  • Tides: Observe from firm margins without entering flooded channels.
  • Protect: Avoid crushing mats that shelter marsh wildlife.
