Torrey pine

Also known as Soledad Pine, Del Mar Pine, Lone Pine

Torrey pines are among the rarest pine species on Earth, famous for their open, wind-sculpted crowns clinging to rugged sandstone bluffs along the Pacific coast. Their heavy, thick-scaled cones require up to three years to mature, producing large seeds historically dispersed by jays and small mammals. Facing severe pressures from bark beetle infestations and prolonged drought, wild populations remain confined to two precarious native strongholds.
