Rufous-headed chachalacas forage through the canopy and midstory in tight-knit family groups, frequently announcing their presence with loud, syncopated duets that echo across tropical valleys at sunrise. They serve as important seed dispersers across western South America, clambering along limbs to harvest figs and other soft forest fruits. When startled, they freeze momentarily against dense foliage before exploding into clumsy, noisy glides into the next thicket.
