Humboldt penguins are agile marine hunters that nest along the arid, rocky shores of Peru and Chile. They navigate cold coastal currents to capture small schooling fish, returning to excavate deep burrows in guano deposits or rocky crevices. Recognizable by a thick black band encircling their white chest and pink bare skin around the base of the beak, these birds rely on strong social bonds within tightly packed breeding colonies.
