River Lapwing

Vanellus duvaucelii

Also known as Spur-winged Lapwing, River Plover

River lapwings patrol wide gravel bars and sandbanks along large, slow-flowing rivers, using sharp eyesight to snatch prey from the shoreline. Pairs maintain strict territories year-round, vocalizing with high-pitched piercing calls that echo across open river channels when disturbed. During the breeding season, they lay well-camouflaged eggs directly on exposed shingle, aggressively dive-bombing intruders and deploying wing spurs in fierce aerial defense.

Responsible observation
  • Distance: Use binoculars or a spotting scope from riverbanks to avoid flushing resting pairs.
  • Breeding Season: Watch your step on sandbars between March and June to avoid crushing camouflaged nests.
  • Alarm Behavior: Retreat immediately if adults take flight and circle overhead with sharp alarm calls.
