Micrurus spixii
Micrurus spixiiAlso known as Amazon Coral Snake, Amazonian Coral Snake, Spix's Coral Snake
Amazon coral snakes are massive, secretive elapids that spend most of their lives concealed beneath deep leaf litter, rotting logs, and loose soil on the Amazon basin floor. Ranking among the largest true coral snakes in the world, adults possess potent neurotoxic venom used primarily to subdue amphisbaenians, lizards, and other snakes. When threatened, they often flatten the rear portion of their body and curl their brightly ringed tail into a defensive decoy while hiding the head.

Interaction riskVery high
- Low
- Moderate
- High
- Very high
- Why interaction risk is very high
- Possesses potent neurotoxic venom; maintain distance and never attempt to handle.
- Why it is dangerous
- Produces powerful post-synaptic neurotoxins that block neuromuscular junctions, potentially causing respiratory failure, paralysis, and death if untreated.
- How to recognize a risky encounter
- Look for alternating triads of black bands separated by white or cream rings against red body intervals, along with a blunt head and cylindrical body.
- What to do
- Stop moving, step back slowly, and allow the snake to crawl away into ground cover without harassment.
Responsible observation
- Observation distance: Step back at least two body lengths if encountered on forest paths.
- Footwear caution: Wear sturdy closed boots when walking off-trail through deep rainforest leaf litter.
- Log safety: Never roll logs or reach under decaying forest debris with bare hands.
