Hartebeest are distinctive savanna grazers easily recognized by their elongated narrow faces, high shoulder humps, and sharply sloping backs. When alarmed, they can reach galloping speeds over 70 km/h, bouncing in a stiff-legged gait that rapidly outpaces most pursuers.
