Asian Brush-tailed Porcupine
Atherurus macrourusAlso known as Asiatic Brush-tailed Porcupine, Malayan Brush-tailed Porcupine
Asian brush-tailed porcupines navigate dense rainforest floors and karst caves under the cover of darkness, relying on sensitive whiskers to forage for fallen fruit, roots, and tubers. Their slender bodies feature dark spiny fur anchored by a long tail ending in a distinctive bundle of hollow, rattle-like quills. When threatened, these nocturnal rodents stamp their feet and shake their tail bundle to produce a dry warning hiss before darting into subterranean burrows.
