Black-footed Ferret

Black-footed ferrets are specialized prairie predators that depend almost entirely on prairie dog colonies for both food and underground shelter. Once declared extinct in the wild, intensive captive breeding and reintroduction programs have slowly brought small populations back to the Great Plains. They slip through subterranean tunnel networks under cover of night, using sharp claws and keen senses to hunt sleeping rodents.
