Mammal
Greater Grison
Galictis vittataAlso known as Grison
Greater grisons are lithe, low-slung predators sporting a sharp contrast between their frosty grey-black backs and jet-black undersides, separated by a crisp white stripe crossing the forehead and shoulders. Agile hunters both on land and in water, they use slender bodies to pursue rodents into underground burrows and navigate hollow logs with ease. Although primarily solitary and elusive, pairs occasionally hunt together, communicating through low barks and scent marks left by potent anal glands.

- What to do
- Maintain a generous viewing distance and allow any startled animal a clear escape path into dense brush.
Responsible observation
- Observation: Scan low underbrush near streams and forest edges early in the morning when activity peaks.
- Camera Traps: Position motion-triggered cameras along fallen logs and trail junctions to capture elusive sightings.
