Brown meagre inhabit coastal waters, estuaries, and surf zones where they hunt schooling fish and crustaceans under cover of murky water. Males produce loud, resonant drumming sounds by contracting specialized muscles against their swim bladder during summer spawning assemblies. These powerful predators are renowned for their pearly silver scales, bright yellow mouth linings, and rapid juvenile growth.
