Ocellaris anemonefish live in small, strictly hierarchical colonies nestled among the stinging tentacles of sea anemones, shielded by an external mucus coating that inhibits the host's nematocysts. Each group consists of a dominant breeding female, a smaller reproductive male, and non-breeding subordinates; should the female die, the breeding male permanently transitions sex to replace her. While guarding their host territory, adults vigorously dart outward to deter intruders, communicating social status and alarm through rhythmic clicking noises generated by their pharyngeal teeth.
