Rohu

Labeo rohita

Also known as Rui, Ruhi, Roho Labeo

Rohu is a powerful, column-feeding freshwater carp native to the river basins of South Asia, recognized by its arched back, thick fringed lips, and iridescent silvery-red scales. Adults form active river shoals during the monsoon season, undertaking upstream migrations into flooded plains and shallow tributaries to spawn. Central to traditional South Asian freshwater polyculture for centuries, wild populations remain vital contributors to local river ecology and inland artisanal fisheries.
