Sawcheek Scorpionfish

Brachypterois serrulata

Also known as Pygmy Lionfish, Serrated Cheek Scorpionfish

Sawcheek scorpionfish blend seamlessly into soft benthic sediments of the northwestern Pacific, relying on mottled russet bars and broad, fan-shaped pectoral fins for camouflage. Rather than swimming actively, they settle motionless on silt and mud bottoms where fine serrations along their cheek ridges help break up their facial outline. When small shrimps or juvenile fish wander close, they flare their fins and lunge forward to engulf their quarry in a sudden suction strike.

  3. High
  4. Very high
Why interaction risk is very high
Dorsal and anal fin spines deliver painful venom; avoid touching or handling.
Why it is dangerous
Spines along the dorsal, pelvic, and anal fins contain glandular tissue delivering proteinaceous venom that causes severe pain, swelling, and localized tissue distress.
How to recognize a risky encounter
Look for a compact, reddish-barred body with fan-shaped pectoral fins and noticeable, saw-like teeth along the cheek ridge below the eyes.
What to do
Give the fish ample space and never attempt to pick it up, immersing accidental puncture wounds in hot water to denature the venom.
Responsible observation
  • Observation: Look along soft sand or silt shelves at depths below 20 meters.
  • Handling: Never reach toward or handle resting fish, as fin spines carry defensive venom.
