Longsnout Seahorse

Hippocampus reidi

Also known as Slender Seahorse

Longsnout seahorses drift gracefully through coastal shallows, anchoring their prehensile tails around seagrass blades, gorgonians, and mangrove prop roots. Masters of camouflage, individuals shift coloration between bright yellow, orange, and mottled brown to match their immediate surroundings. Males carry fertilized eggs in a specialized brood pouch, enduring a multi-week pregnancy before giving birth to hundreds of fully formed, free-swimming young.

Responsible observation
  • Diving Etiquette: Maintain neutral buoyancy and never touch or grab their delicate prehensile tails.
  • Lighting Care: Avoid sustained bright underwater lights or repetitive strobes, which cause disorientation.
