Dazzling blue morphos command attention as flashes of electric blue cut across tropical forest clearings, an optical illusion generated by microscopic wing scales refracting light rather than true blue pigment. When perched with wings pressed together, cryptic brown undersides marked with concentric eyespots instantly disguise the insect against bark and dead foliage. Adults spend warm mornings patrolling river corridors and forest gaps before dropping to the forest floor to lap up juices from decomposing fruit and weeping tree wounds.
