Brachiosaurus altithorax

Brachiosaurus altithorax

Towering over Late Jurassic floodplains, Brachiosaurus fed primarily in the upper conifer canopy that remained completely out of reach for contemporaneous herbivores. Its forelimbs exceeded the hindlimbs in length, creating a trunk that sloped steeply down toward a relatively short tail and elevating the neck base high off the ground. Spoon-shaped teeth stripped tough needles and fronds whole, relying on an immense digestive tract and microbial fermentation rather than chewing to break down fibrous plant material.
