Confucius' Bird
Confuciusornis sanctusAlso known as Holy Confucius Bird, Confucius Bird
Confucius' birds flourished across the temperate lakeside forests of Early Cretaceous China, gliding between trees with broad wings tipped with prominent curved claws. While retaining primitive reptilian characteristics such as separate finger bones, they pioneered avian modernizations including a toothless horny beak and a shortened tail ending in a pygostyle. Fossils frequently preserve striking sexual dimorphism, where certain individuals sport a pair of long, ribbon-like tail streamers used for social or courtship displays.
