Argentavis magnificens
Argentavis magnificensAlso known as Giant Teratorn, Magnificent Teratorn
Argentavis magnificens was a titanic raptorial bird that soared over the open grasslands and scrub of prehistoric Argentina during the late Miocene. Relying on thermal updrafts and steady slope winds to stay aloft, it practiced dynamic soaring much like modern condors, surveying immense territories with minimal flapping. Its formidable skull and hooked bill allowed it to swallow rabbit-sized prey whole and displace terrestrial predators from carcasses on the ancient pampas.
