Fairy Martin
Petrochelidon arielAlso known as Bottle Swallow, Land Swallow, Cliff Martin
Fairy martins are gregarious aerial insectivores celebrated for building intricate, bottle-shaped mud nests packed together in dense colonial clusters. Flocks sweep low over grasslands and waterways, capturing swarms of tiny flying insects with remarkable agility on slender, pointed wings. After breeding across southern Australia, many populations migrate northward to winter across northern Australia, New Guinea, and parts of Indonesia.
