Varicose Wart Slug

Phyllidia varicosa

Also known as Varicose Phyllidia, Warty Nudibranch, Yellow-warted Sea Slug

Varicose wart slugs glide openly across Indo-Pacific coral reefs, advertising potent chemical defenses through raised blue-gray ridges capped with vibrant yellow tubercles. Unlike typical dorid nudibranchs that breathe through an exposed feather-like gill circlet on the back, they conceal delicate respiratory leaflets beneath the outer skirt of their tough, leathery mantle. When threatened, epidermal glands discharge pungent isocyanopupukeanane terpenes derived from their sponge diet, a chemical weapon capable of killing nearby fish in confined waters.

Why interaction risk is high
Secretes noxious chemical mucus that irritates eyes and skin; observe underwater without touching.
Why it is dangerous
Secretes volatile isocyanide terpenes including 9-isocyanopupukeanane that cause burning pain to sensitive skin and mucus membranes.
How to recognize a risky encounter
Recognized by its blue-gray body covered in black longitudinal lines, yellow-tipped dorsal ridges, and vibrant yellow rhinophores.
What to do
Do not touch or agitate underwater, and thoroughly rinse gear and hands in sea water if accidental contact occurs.
Responsible observation
  • Diving Etiquette: Admire from a short distance without disturbing the surrounding delicate coral head.
  • No Handling: Avoid touching the mantle, as defensive secretions cause eye and skin stinging.
