American Lady

Vanessa virginiensis

Also known as American Painted Lady, Hunter's Butterfly

American Lady butterflies flash bright orange and black uppersides, but their most distinctive hallmark is two oversized, jewel-like eyespots staring out from beneath each hindwing. Caterpillars construct communal silk nests among the foliage of aster-family host plants, feeding safely under the webbed canopy before pupating. Adults are strong fliers that bask on warm bare ground and migrate northward each spring, following blooming nectar corridors across open country.

Safe to observe at a normal distance.
Responsible observation
  • Sunlit Perches: Look for adults sunning themselves on gravel paths, warm rocks, or bare soil during mid-morning.
  • Gentle Approach: Move slowly without casting a shadow over the wings, as rapid changes in light trigger an immediate escape flight.
  • Host Gardening: Plant native pussytoes or cudweeds to attract breeding females seeking leaves for egg deposition.
