Echeveria shaviana

Echeveria shaviana

Also known as Mexican Hens, Mexican Hens and Chicks

Echeveria shaviana clings to rocky limestone slopes and pine-oak forest cliffs in the rugged mountains of northeastern Mexico. Its distinctive rosettes feature soft, blue-gray leaves with dramatically crinkled, translucent margins that blush vibrant pink under intense sunlight. In midsummer, it sends up arching stalks bearing lantern-like pink and orange blossoms that attract passing hummingbirds and solitary bees.

Why interaction risk is low
Safe to observe at a normal distance.
Responsible observation
  • Powdery Coating: Avoid brushing the leaves, as oils from human skin permanently rub off the protective waxy farina.
  • Moisture Caution: Look for offsets clustering at the base rather than touching wet soil, which can induce fatal root rot.
  • Sunlight Cues: Notice how leaf fringes turn vivid pink or violet when exposed to direct morning sun.
