Flat-stalked spindle thrives in the moist, cool understories and mountain margins of Northeast Asia, where its ribbon-like flattened pedicels suspend clusters of subtle star-shaped blossoms in late spring. By mid-autumn, its foliage shifts to intense shades of scarlet while the deep carmine seed capsules split open to reveal bright orange, fleshy arils. These vivid fruit displays attract woodland songbirds, which eat the seed coverings and inadvertently disperse the seeds throughout the temperate forest.
All parts contain toxic glycosides; wild berries have toxic look-alikes, so never ingest any part.
Why it is dangerous
Contains sesquiterpene alkaloids and cardiotoxic glycosides that trigger severe gastrointestinal inflammation, vomiting, diarrhea, and heart rate irregularities.
