Neelakurinji

Strobilanthes kunthiana

Also known as Kurinji, Gurige

Blanketing the high-altitude shola grasslands of India's Western Ghats, Neelakurinji is famed for its synchronized gregarious blooming cycle occurring once every twelve years. Entire hillsides transform into an ethereal sea of purplish-blue blossoms, a dramatic phenomenon that gave the Nilgiri Hills their name, meaning 'Blue Mountains.' Following this massive flowering event, the shrubs set seed and die back entirely, allowing a new generation to slowly mature from the mast crop of seeds over the next decade.

Safe to observe at a normal distance.
What to notice
Look for low, woody shrubs bearing opposite, elliptical leaves that erupt into dense clusters of bell-shaped, purplish-blue blossoms across open hill slopes.
Support conservation
View exclusively from designated paths and viewing points; never pick stems, collect seeds, or wander into shrub patches.
Responsible observation
  • Stay on Marked Paths: Trampling crushes vulnerable seedlings and erodes fragile montane topsoil.
  • Do Not Pick Flowers: Removing blooms prevents seed setting vital to the next twelve-year generation.
  • Check Bloom Calendars: Local forest departments monitor and publish schedules for regional flowering cycles.
