Narrowleaf Sargasso is a completely pelagic brown seaweed that spends its entire life cycle floating freely in open ocean currents without ever attaching to the seafloor. Gas-filled spheres called pneumatocysts keep its branched, golden-brown fronds buoyant at the sunlit surface, forming vast drifting ecosystems in the Sargasso Sea and the Atlantic. These floating mats serve as critical open-ocean nurseries, offering shelter and rich foraging grounds for juvenile sea turtles, specialized pelagic crabs, and camouflaged fish.
