Whitemargin Sandmat

Euphorbia albomarginata

Also known as Rattlesnake Weed, White-margined Spurge

Whitemargin sandmat forms dense, flat mats of wiry stems radiating across sun-baked gravel and disturbed desert soils. Each minute flower cluster features tiny white petal-like appendages surrounding deep maroon glands, resembling miniature daisies under close inspection. Like other spurges, broken stems exude an acrid, milky latex that deters grazing herbivores and helps seal wounded tissues against water loss.

  3. High
  4. Very high
Why interaction risk is high
Broken stems exude toxic, irritating milky sap; avoid bare skin contact and do not ingest.
Why it is dangerous
Produces latex containing diterpene esters that cause blistering skin irritation, intense ocular inflammation, and vomiting if swallowed.
How to recognize a risky encounter
Recognized by prostrate stems trailing along the ground that bleed white milky sap when snapped.
What to do
Wear gloves if removing by hand, wash tools thoroughly, and keep sap away from eyes and mouth.
Responsible observation
  • Observation distance: View safely up close, but refrain from plucking stems to prevent sap exposure.
  • Identification check: Look for distinct white-rimmed petal-like glands on creeping red stems.
