Livelong Saxifrage
Saxifraga paniculataAlso known as Silver Saxifrage, Alpine Saxifrage, Encrusted Saxifrage, White Mountain Saxifrage
Livelong saxifrage forms dense, silver-green rosettes that cling directly to rocky alpine crevices and cliff faces. Special pores along the leaf margins secrete calcium carbonate, forming a sparkling crust of lime that reflects harsh high-altitude sunlight and conserves moisture. In early summer, delicate red-spotted white flowers emerge on branched stems held high above the evergreen foliage.

Responsible observation
- Cliff Spotting: Look for tiny silver-edged rosettes wedged into calcareous rock cracks.
- Seasonal Timing: Hike high-altitude ridges from June to August to observe open flower panicles.
- Tread Lightly: Watch your footing on scree slopes to avoid crushing slow-growing cushions.
