Cloudberries thrive across circumpolar peat bogs, anchoring into deep Sphagnum moss with extensive underground rhizomes. Each unbranched shoot bears crinkled, kidney-shaped leaves alongside a solitary white flower, with male and female blossoms occurring on entirely separate plants. Pollinated flowers mature into aggregate drupelets that transition from hard red clusters into soft amber globes, providing seasonal forage for subarctic birds and mammals.
