Bigpod sesbania shoots up rapidly in sunlit wetlands and disturbed floodplains, reaching heights of up to four meters in a single warm season. Its delicate, feathery pinnate foliage folds upward during darkness or extreme midday heat to conserve moisture. Slender, dangling pods develop following yellow pea-like blossoms, persisting into late autumn to release hard seeds adapted for water dispersal.
Seeds contain toxic compounds dangerous to livestock; do not ingest any plant parts.
Why it is dangerous
Seeds and foliage contain sesbanimide and toxic saponins that cause severe gastrointestinal irritation, diarrhea, and heart depression in grazing livestock.
How to recognize a risky encounter
Distinguished by tall bamboo-like stems, feathery compound leaves with 20 to 70 leaflets, and very long, narrow hanging pods.
What to do
Do not consume or allow livestock to graze mature plants; wear gloves if pulling dense stands to prevent sap exposure.

Identification: Look for yellow, pea-like flowers often speckled with purple, giving way to long pencil-thin pods.
