Old fashioned weigela blooms prolifically in late spring, draping its arching branches with dense clusters of rose-pink, funnel-shaped flowers that draw hummingbirds and long-tongued bees. Native to East Asian hillsides and mixed forests, this deciduous shrub produces slender, two-valved seed capsules that release winged seeds on autumn winds. Centuries of selective cultivation have yielded dozens of garden varieties, yet wild plants thrive along forest margins and rocky scrublands across northeastern Asia.
