Tulip Anthurium

Anthurium amnicola

Also known as Tulip Tailflower, Hawaiian Tulip

Tulip anthurium thrives as a rheophyte along rocky, fast-flowing stream margins in central Panama, anchoring tightly to boulders with tenacious roots that resist seasonal flash floods. Its slender, upright leaves support delicate lavender to purplish-pink spathes with a sweet, floral fragrance reminiscent of tea roses. Prized by horticulturists for its compact stature and unique color palette, it has served as the key genetic parent for dozens of popular dwarf indoor hybrids.

  3. High
  4. Very high
Why interaction risk is high
Tissues contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals; toxic to pets and humans if chewed.
Why it is dangerous
Microscopic needle-shaped calcium oxalate crystals embed in mouth tissue, triggering acute burning, lip swelling, and drooling.
How to recognize a risky encounter
Look for glossy, lance-shaped leaves emerging from a compact clumping base topped by small, erect violet-pink spathes.
What to do
Keep out of reach of companion animals and wash hands thoroughly after trimming dead foliage.
Responsible observation
  • Container culture: Grow in an airy, fast-draining bark mixture and water consistently to mimic stream banks.
  • Pet safety: Place potted specimens on high shelves well away from chewing cats or dogs.
