Silver Squill

Ledebouria socialis

Also known as Wood Hyacinth, Leopard Lily, Violacea Silver Squill

Silver squill forms dense clusters of teardrop-shaped purple bulbs that sit mostly above the soil line, sprouting striking lance-shaped leaves splashed with dark green spots on a metallic silver backdrop. In spring, arching stems rise to display tiny bell-shaped flowers of green and white tipped with delicate pink stamens. Native to dry South African thickets, this drought-tolerant geophyte survives extended dry spells by storing moisture inside its swollen bulb scales.

Why interaction risk is high
Toxic to pets and humans if ingested; keep containers safely out of reach of animals.
Why it is dangerous
Contains cardiac glycosides and toxic saponins that cause severe gastrointestinal distress, lethargy, and heart disturbances if chewed or swallowed by pets.
How to recognize a risky encounter
Look for purplish bulbs resting atop the soil bearing silver leaves mottled with dark green spots.
What to do
Keep containerized plants off accessible ground surfaces and wash hands thoroughly after repotting or pruning.
Responsible observation
  • Light: Place in bright indirect sunlight to keep leaf patterns vivid and sharp.
  • Watering: Allow soil to dry out thoroughly between waterings to avoid bulb rot.
  • Safety: Position potted plants away from curious domestic pets.
