Ginger produces leafy annual pseudostems rising about a meter high from underground branched rhizomes that store rich aromatic oils. Dense cone-like spikes emerge directly from the rhizome, bearing unusual pale yellow flowers patterned with dark purple markings. Though rarely seen blooming outside warm humid tropical climates, this herbaceous perennial is widely cultivated across the globe for its distinct pungent rootstock.
